Canada Aims at H-1Bs

One man’s poach is another’s welcome mat.

Headline writers found different ways to introduce stories on what Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has named its new “Tech Talent Strategy.” That program is designed to make it easier for workers in the U.S. with H-1B visas to move to Canada, and The Detroit News summarized it as “Canada launches bid to poach skilled tech workers from US.” San Francisco’s SFGate similarly titled a story “Canada is coming to poach Bay Area tech workers,” while The San Francisco Chronicle more moderately gave the story the headline “Canada’s luring Silicon Valley’s H-1B visa workers with new programs.”

Forbes.com and Canada’s CIC News have good coverage of the strategy. Andy J. Semotiuk closed his story for Forbes, writing, “America desperately needs to reassess and revise its H1B visa program to ensure the program remains competitive. Long term stability, career growth, and a supportive environment for families are things America must provide. Retaining H1-B workers should be a priority for the U.S. because they contribute to economic growth, foster innovation, and maintain the nation's position as a leader in technology and industry.”

That’s the part that got our attention—the idea that Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser and people on his staff sat down and said, What does the world look like today? What are our values on immigration? What do we want from immigration? Okay, let’s make that thing. Let’s attract the best and the brightest, let’s invite them, to come convert their dollars into loonies and twonies.

It’s reassuring to know that these conversations happen, and if they can happen in Canada they can happen here.
