What To Do If You Encounter ICE

Accounts of ICE raids are becoming common around the country, and there are stories of recent ICE activities in Orleans and Jefferson parishes. So far though, fears of a mass raid appear to be overblown.

These days though, all immigrants—legal and those without status—need to know what to do if caught up in a sweep by ICE. A lot of bad consequences can result from making the wrong decision. First and most importantly, do not open the door unless there’s a judge-signed warrant, maintain silence, and never show any passport or ID from the country-of-origin.

For more, read the ACLU’s guide to your rights and what to do if stopped by the police, ICE, or the FBI.

It's also a good idea to know how to protect yourself, your assets and your family if you face deportation.
